Fred is a House Artist for Shanghai Low. An artist/animator living in Minneapolis, he subsists on free-lance work for film studios in Los Angeles – while naturally focusing on his own creations.
For SLT, he has developed graphics, visual ideas and concept art for several projects since 2009, including Steppenwolf Theatre for Young Adults' ANIMAL FARM, extensive work for Alastair Reynold's DIAMOND DOGS and Conan Doyle's HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES. He is currently illustrating Lion Miller's 1953 story, THE AVAILABLE DATA ON THE WORP REACTION, as one of the company's signature projects.
Fred received a BFA in fine art from Carnegie Mellon in 1992, then attended Cal Arts for Experimental Animation. Mentored by the late Jules Engel, he animated his first short, WIND, which received screenings at MOMA in New York and the Pompiduo Centre in Paris. In 1997, he was the recipient of the Princess Grace Award for Film.
His association with stage work began in 2001, when he designed his first posters for LA’s Odyssey Theatre – a relationship that continues to this day - and provided Visual Development for their 2004 production of Manfred Karge’s CONQUEST OF THE SOUTH POLE, directed by Steve Pickering.
