Alice Austen is a Resident Playwright at Chicago Dramatists and the recipient of a 2007 Joseph Jefferson Award Nomination (Best New Work) for her play WATER. She joined Shanghai Low Theatricals in 2009. She was awarded a residency by the Royal Court Theatre (London), has recently completed a novel, The Geometry of Chance, and is writing her second, Find Her. Alice’s new play CHERRY ORCHARD MASSACRE received its first staged reading in Chicago this spring.
Alice’s plays have been seen at numerous theatres around the country and in Europe including Victory Gardens, Steppenwolf Theatre Company, Route 66, Milwaukee Chamber Theatre, The Irish Theatre Company (Brussels), Famous Door Theatre, Stage Left Theatre, The New Plays Festival (Chicago) Goats and Monkeys and Chicago Dramatists. Alice’s play Best of All Possible Worlds, with new music by Josh Schmidt, was performed at the Milwaukee Rep Stackner Cabaret in February and received staged readings at Chicago Dramatists and Route 66. Alice’s plays PLAZA HOTEL BALLROOM and HER ONLY FAULT have received staged readings in Chicago and New York. THE DESTRUCTION OF CURVES has been produced and performed in New York, Chicago and regionally. FOUL: ON TORTURE AND LITTLE LEAGUE BASEBALL was performed at Theatre 503 (London). FIRE was performed in the Steppenwolf Garage and produced by the Prop Theatre.
Alice was the first American to receive a fellowship to the European Court of Human Rights at the Council of Europe in Strasbourg and lived for a number of years in France, Belgium and Prague where she represented, among others, the Czech Republic, and helped effectuate Vaclav Havel’s transformation of the Czech government.
Alice teaches playwriting at Chicago Dramatists and has been a Guest Artist/Lecturer at Lawrence University, Newberry Library (Chicago) and the University of Wisconsin. She is a member of the Dramatists Guild and is a graduate of Harvard University.
